 Abstract:  Peter Henry Kaiser (1840-1929) was a Cleveland, Ohio, lawyer who grew up in the Dutch Valley area of Tuscarawas County, Ohio. He was an amateur historian and wrote numerous short stories about his childhood home in Tuscarawas County. His second wife, Beza (Boynton) Kaiser, also wrote stories about the early history of Tuscarawas County. Their children were Ella Kaiser Carruth and John Boynton Kaiser. The collection consists of diaries of Peter Henry Kaiser, writings by various Kaiser family members, correspondence, a class roll book, an account book, genealogical notes on the Kaiser, Boynton and Culver families, newspaper clippings, a scrapbook, land records, and miscellaneous materials. The collection deals primarily with the personal lives of Peter Henry Kaiser and his family. Included are some historical materials on Tuscarawas County and three letters Peter Henry Kaiser wrote during the Civil War.

 Abstract:  Edward D. Lynde was a nationally recognized authority in the field of social reform during the first half of the twentieth century. Much of Lynde's career was spent with the Associated Charities of Cleveland, Ohio, 1923-1933; then he became assistant director of the Family Welfare Association in New York. He returned to Cleveland in 1935 to head the Cleveland Welfare Federation (later the Federation for Community Planning) until his retirement in 1959. The collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, and articles pertaining to Lynde's personal life and professional career, and genealogical materials relating to Lynde family members. The collection pertains to the private and professional life of Edward D. Lynde, particularly his involvement in the social service reform movement, and relationships between Lynde family members. Included are the Civil War letters and documents of Lynde's grandfather, Abraham G. Schermerhorn, letters from Myron H. Bent, a journalist with the Brooklyn, N.Y. Times-Herald regarding his anti-New Deal activities, and letters to Lynde's mother, Ardelle S.L. Nutting.

 Abstract:  Jeremiah Browning Mansfield, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Mansfield, was born in 1841 in Ohio, and raised on his father's farm in Wayne Township, Jefferson County, Ohio. He and his older brother Oliver served in the 52nd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. Jeremiah Mansfield participated in the Battles of Chickamauga and the Battle of Perrysville, and then served at Camp Sheridan in Nashville, Tennessee until the end of the war. He and Elizabeth Taggart Mansfield were married in Harrison County, Ohio in 1869. She was born in 1845 in Harrison County, Ohio, and received a teaching certificate in 1863. Her brother, Milton, attended Oberlin College and Michigan Law School. By 1880, Jeremiah and Elizabeth Mansfield had settled in Wells Township, Jefferson County, Ohio, where they farmed and raised five children. The collection consists of correspondence, essays, and miscellany relating to the Mansfield and Taggart families; Jefferson and Harrison counties, Ohio; the Civil War; and Oberlin College and Michigan Law School. The papers include letters written over a twenty-year period to James Carrick, an early settler of Harrison County, Ohio and ancestor of the Mansfield/Taggart family.

The Giffords' son was enlisted with the 19th Ohio Light Artillery during the years 1862-1864, and he wrote about his experiences to his mother. Family matters and farm news were exchanged in the letters between the two families. The collection consists of an advertisement, correspondence, an index, and one legal document.

 Abstract:  The Buell family was a pioneer family from Connecticut who helped settle Marietta, Ohio. Joseph Buell was a sergeant at Fort Harmar, across the Muskingum River from Marietta, when the first settling party from the Ohio Company arrived in April 1788. He later settled in Marietta with his family. Joseph Buell ran a successful tavern. In addition, he was appointed an associate justice of the Washington County Court of Common Pleas and a major general in the Ohio Militia in 1803, and served an elected state senator from 1803-1805. Joseph's brother Timothy Buell was a captain in the militia and also served as a county magistrate, a state representative from 1820-1822, and sheriff of Washington County. Many of their descendants were also prominent in the affairs of Marietta and Washington County. The collection consists of correspondence, genealogical material, transcripts of journals, and family recollections of the settlement of the Ohio frontier. The major part of the collection consists of correspondence between members of the Buell family (1810-1890). Genealogical material is composed of charts, histories, sketches, notes, and a memorial and refers to the Buell family and related Curtis, Tupper, Lewis, Nye, and Gray families. Included is a history of the Lewis family which claims lineage from George Washington and a pedigree evidencing the Washington-Lewis line. The collection is of value for those interested in the settlement and development of the Ohio frontier and the Northwest Territory, and the establishment of Marietta, Ohio. It includes a transcript of a journal of Sergeant Joseph Buell, kept from 1785-1789 and detailing the establishment and maintenance of a frontier military outpost. Extensive materials on the process of recruiting soldiers for service in the 63rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry regiment during the Civil War are included in William H. Buell's papers. Also of interest are the recollections of Pheobe Wood Putnam concerning her journey from Connecticut to settle in Marietta, and Anselm Tupper Nye and unidentified members of the Buell family concerning the settlement of Miami County. Genealogists will find useful records on the Buell, Curtis, Gray, Lewis, Nye, and Tupper families of southern Ohio.

 Abstract:  Caleb Emerson was a Marietta, Ohio lawyer, journalist and abolitionist, and co-founder of the Marietta Branch of the Washington Benevolent Society. He married Mary Dana, the daughter of an early settler of Washington County. Their son, George Dana, was a captain in the 1st Michigan Engineers during the Civil War. Their son-in-law, William D. Bailey was Treasurer of Warren Township, Ohio. The collection consists of personal and business correspondence; legal papers, financial papers (receipts and accounts); historical, political, and biographical sketches; public letters and addresses; notes and articles on slavery, abolition, religion, and temperance; minutes and journals of the Washington Benevolent Society; civic records of Warren Township; and original poetry.

 Abstract:  Joseph and Jacob Perkins were sons of Simon Perkins, general land agent in the Western Reserve. They came from Warren, Ohio, to Cleveland in the 1850s to engage in banking, railroad building, real estate and various businesses. Together they organized and operated the Cleveland & Mahoning Railroad. Joseph was president of the Bank of Commerce (1852-1872), a leading benefactor of Cleveland charities, the first president of Cleveland City Hospital, and a trustee for Western Reserve College (1846-1885). Jacob, also a businessman and president of the Cleveland & Mahoning Railroad, was a prominent Ohio politician as well, serving as a member of the Ohio Constitutional Convention in 1850. His son, Jacob Bishop Perkins, was a large real estate owner and builder in Cleveland. Joseph Perkins' papers include business correspondence, building construction contracts, land, tenement, and office leases, financial statements and business records, maps and surveys, cancelled land contracts and cancelled checks. Jacob Perkins' papers include voluminous correspondence, and accounts and receipts of business affairs. Jacob Bishop Perkins' papers include correspondence, legal papers, contracts, deeds, leases, maps, and surveys, all pertaining primarily to his affairs as a real estate owner and builder in Cleveland. Other family papers include school books, letter books, estate papers, genealogical information, a scrapbook on the early settlement of the Western Reserve, business papers of Joseph's son Douglas and a Civil War diary by another son Charles. Also included are photographs, diaries, trip journals, correspondence from Simon and Nancy Perkins, financial journals, ledgers and account books of Stephen E. Brooks, as well as material relating to the Cleveland, Warren & Pittsburgh Railroad, the Chicago, Danville & Vincennes Railroad, the Cleveland Female Seminary, the Cleveland Board of Park Commissioners, the Hill Clutch Company and the Walker Manufacturing Company.
